Climate change is the greatest environmental challenge facing the world today. Carbon dioxide and other gases warm the surface of the planet naturally by trapping solar heat in the atmosphere. By burning fossil fuels such as coal, gas and oil and clearing forests we have dramatically increased the amount of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere and temperatures are rising. Rising global temperatures will bring changes in weather patterns, rising sea levels and increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. The effects will be felt here in the UK and internationally there may be severe problems for people in regions that are particularly vulnerable to change.

We had torrential storms and a tornado in Leeds last year. A tornado requires intense heat to form, to which we had until October. It was pitch black when the tornado formed in the middle of the afternoon with rain rushing up rooftops, uplifting trees and roofs!

 

The effects of global warming is worse in the Winter when trees have shed their leaves and absorb less CO². As it gets darker and colder we use our cars, lights, heating more frequently. Coming up to Christmas so much wastage is compiled from packaging, wrapping and cards. More energy is comsumed from Christmas lights worldwide and also the use of new electrical presents. Fireworks for the new year is also damaging for the atmosphere.

An interesting but disturbing fact that I learnt from "An Inconvenient Truth" was that the winter in some places are no longer cold enough to kill off some bugs that are eating away at our forests at a rapid rate. So much change is occuring. Animals are evolving and adapting causing effects to nature and habitat. Medicines are in danger as plants/trees are becoming endangered. New diseases are also forming.

** The number of Category 4 and 5 hurricanes has almost doubled in the last 30 years.
** Malaria has spread to higher altitudes in places like the Colombian Andes, 7,000 feet above sea level.
** Deaths from global warming will double in just 25 years -- to 300,000 people a year
** Global sea levels could rise by more than 20 feet with the loss of shelf ice in Greenland and Antarctica, devastating coastal areas worldwide.
** Heat waves will be more frequent and more intense. Droughts and wildfires will occur more often.
** The Arctic Ocean could be ice free in summer by 2050.
** More than a million species worldwide could be driven to extinction by 2050.

** Please do your bit and recycle anything you can and conserve as much energy as possible !! 。。

++ 1 recycled tin can would save enough energy to power a TV for 3 hours.
++ 1 recycled bottle (glass) would save enough energy to power a computer for 25 minutes.
++ 1 recycled bottle (plastic) would save enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for 3 hours.
++ 70% less energy is required to recycle paper compared with making it from raw materials.
++ Up to 60% of the rubbish that ends up in the dustbin could be recycled.
++ The unreleased energy contained in the average dustbin each year could power a TV for 5,000 hours.
++ The largest lake in the Britain could be filled with rubbish from the UK in 8 months.
++ On average, 16% of the money you spend on a product pays for the packaging, which ultimately ends up as rubbish.

 

██████ What YOU can do ! ██████

╬ Don't leave your TV/Monitors on standby
╬ Use public transport/car share and minimise journeys
╬ Unplug electronics from the wall when not in use. Hairdryers, TVs, phone chargers still use energy when turned off (lower your energy bill!)
╬ Switch ur lights off when ur not using the room. Also use energysavinglightbulbs
╬ Use less carrier bags when you go shopping ~ Say you don't need one!
╬ Use less hot water and take showers
╬ Recycle paper, cans, bottles ~ It's easy!
